Last week my son and I made the hour trek to Austin to visit my sister and mom. While our main purpose for the trip was shopping, we managed to squeeze in a few hours at the Austin Children’s Museum. It was a little smaller than I expected, but it still had more than enough hands-on exhibits to keep my 2-year-old busy. Maybe I’m just spoiled after visiting the Boston Children’s Museum and the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis, both of which are some of the best in the country. Or maybe I was bummed that the three-story slide was closed, even though my son didn’t notice or care. Let’s face it, we take our kids to fun places so that we can play, too. At least I do.

"Look! Three boys who look just like me!"

Slide Away

He could have spent the entire afternoon on this slide.

A pipe organ with a foam paddle and color-coded songbook.

Trying on a hard hat in the construction zone.

In the playhouse looking out the second floor window.

The train table was another favorite, until he tried climbing over it.

Another perk to the museum is the $1 off discount you get at the Berry Austin Yogurt Shop next door when you show your receipt. What better way to end a trip to the museum?

Now that the weather is getting warmer, I think our next day trip will have to be to the natural spring pool at Hamilton Nature Preserve in Dripping Springs, about an hour and a half away. Doesn’t it look so relaxing?
